A kidney biopsy confirms the diagnosis.
To clarify a chronic inflammation of the glomeruli (glomerulonephritis) or nephrotic syndrome often have a kidney biopsy is necessary. This kidney disease can not be detected radiographically or by ultrasound. Also, kidney cysts are frequently punctured. The aspirate is then sent off to the laboratory for bacteriological and cytological examination and inspected. Thus, the renal biopsy is less the discovery of a disease, but rather to secure the diagnosis and determination of appropriate therapy.

Local anesthesia is often sufficient.
The kidney biopsy is performed under ultrasound control. Almost always a local anesthetic is sufficient. Similar to the prostate biopsy are the biggest risks of bleeding and the introduction of germs. Such infections are usually less dangerous but can be treated with antibiotics.
