Open surgical technique of BPH

Bookmark and Share
Operations through the abdominal wall are rarely required.
As an alternative to prostate removal through the urethra is the open surgical technique (through the abdominal wall) are available. It comes into use,

when the enlarged prostate gland has a specific weight (80 to 100 grams) exceeded
when there are simultaneously large bladder stones
If additional large bladder diverticulum should be removed in one session.

The urethra remains unaffected.
The open surgical technique has the advantage that the urethra is not affected. It also requires less time than transurethral resection. However, due to higher mortality and complication rates this surgical technique is applied more frequently.
