Cancer: TNM Classification
One is in relation to the therapy very important division on the extent of the tumor in the so-called tumor stages (English "staging") using the internationally accepted TNM classification according to the rules of the UICC (unio Internationalis Contra cancrum, International Union Against Cancer) .

T = tumor
N = lymph node involvement ("nodus")
M = metastases

All malignant tumors of all organs are classified according to this system.
Tumor Classification

T 1-3

usually limited to the organ tumor

T 4

Tumor exceeds the limit organ

N 0

no lymph node involvement

N 1 / 2

usually regional lymph node involvement

N 3

Infestation distant lymph nodes

M 0

no distant metastases

M 1

distant metastases

For each tumor, a separate division exists to the TNM classification, in the T 1-4, N 1-3, M 0 / 1 determined exactly.

Starting from the corresponding TNM classification then takes the assignment instead of the individual tumor stages.

These tumor-stage classification is not only based on the treatment decision (operable or inoperable), but also important for assessing the prognosis.

Other classifications
Although the small cell lung cancer should also be classified according to the TNM system, but there is a simplified classification according to the staging of the Veterans Administration Lung Cancer Study Group (Valge) in the tumor stage "limited" and "extensive disease".

Based on the classification Valge these two tumor stages according to the Marburg classification can be divided further.
