Cancer screening: recommendations

As part of the 'Europe Against Cancer': an action plan to combat cancer 1996-2000 the European Commission, a panel of cancer experts, the "European Code Against Cancer" was formulated.

These 10 recommendations of the Code to indicate which behaviors can reduce the daily life of the personal risk of cancer, what physical signs suggestive of cancer and which methods of cancer screening are applied throughout Europe.

    Do not smoke! Smokers should quit as soon as possible and certainly not to smoke in the presence of others.

    Reduce your alcohol consumption! This applies to beer, wine and spirits.

    Increase your daily intake of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as fiber-rich cereal products. (Detailed information can be found in our subject area for cancer prevention through healthy diet)

    Avoid excess weight, you provide more physical activity and limit intake of fatty foods.

    Avoid excessive sun exposure and SonnenbrändeÖ this applies particularly to children.

    Apply strictly the rules one by which you should be protected from contact with cancer-causing substances.
    You can follow the exact cause health and safety instructions on substances that cause cancer.
    There could be more cancer cure diseases, if detected early.

    Contact your doctor if you notice any unusual swelling, a sore (in mouth), which does not heal, changes in the shape, size or color of a mole or abnormal bleeding.

    Contact your doctor if you notice persistent problems such as chronic cough, persistent hoarseness, a change in bowel movements or urination, or if you notice unexplained weight loss.

    For women: Do you make a regular cervical smear. Take advantage of the systematic screening for cervical cancer.

    For women: Examine your breasts regularly. Take advantage of the early diagnosis of breast cancer, who you are over 30. If you are over 50, you discuss with your doctor whether mammography examinations are necessary for you.
